Our Management Legal Liability course covers everything from law and legislation to “what” is the purpose of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Employers will often be held liable for the conduct of their employees. Even if the employer had no intention or motive for harm and played no physical role in the harm. To understand why you must understand two basic concepts “employer/employee
responsibilities and liabilities” and understand minimum compliance by implementing management control and workplace safety inspections.
• The practice of occupational health and safety, as well as the OHSA, is one of those ‘things’ which impose responsibilities and/or obligations on employers, and, by ignoring those duties, employers continuously put themselves at risk. Failure to fulfill these legal responsibilities employers, and employees could be prosecuted both under civil and criminal law, which may result in fines and/or even imprisonment.
Successful candidates credited with this unit standard can:
• Explain the basic principles of the Act and the accompanying Regulations
• Explain the requirements for minimum compliance stipulated in the Act.
• Interpret the management controls required to achieve compliance
• Explain the obligations of managers in terms of communication and training

HIRA is a process that consists of several sequential steps such as hazard identification, consequence & frequency assessment, risk estimation based on the existing controls and recommendations to reduce those risks which are not under acceptable limits.
Workplace inspections help prevent incidents, injuries and illnesses. Through a critical examination of the workplace, inspections help to identify and record hazards for corrective action. Health and safety committees can help plan, conduct, report and monitor inspections.
Successful candidates credited with this unit standard can:
• Explain the relevant legal requirements to conduct Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspections
• Planning Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspections
• Conducting inspections to identify non-compliance in the workplace
• Reporting on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspections

The main objective of conducting an incident and investigation is above all “prevention”. A good investigation aims to establish a series of events that should have taken place and compares it to what happened to identify areas that need changing. This course is for any individual who is or wishes to be involved in the process of reporting, tracking, and investigating incidents for various Industries, and it serves to support a more effective approach and to develop recommendations that address the systemic causes of the incidents. Successful candidates credited with this unit standard can:

Working at height means working in a place where a person could fall from one level to another. This can be above or below ground level. It does not include slipping, tripping or falling at the same level. Falls from working with ladders and scaffolding are the single biggest cause of workplace deaths, these falls can stop the working process which means loss of time and work production.
The risks associated with working at height must be identified and controlled effectively, prior to any work at height starting. Too many falls from height are caused by a failure to plan and organise work properly.
This course will explain simple, practical measures to reduce the risk of workers falling while working at height and compliance with the OSH Act legal requirements.
Successful candidates credited with this unit standard can:
•Explain the use and limitations of a limited range of fall arrest equipment and fall arrest plan.
•Inspect, assembling and storing fall arrest equipment.
•Select suitable anchor points.
•Use fall arrest systems with a double lanyard.
•Use pre-installed vertical and horizontal life-lines.

What is a Gantry Crane? A gantry crane is a crane built atop a gantry, which is a structure used to straddle an object or workspace. They can range from enormous “full” gantry cranes, capable of lifting some of the heaviest loads in the world, to small shop cranes, used for tasks such as lifting automobile engines out of vehicles. They are also called portal cranes, the “portal” being the empty space straddled by the gantry.
However, a gantry crane is like a bridge crane, but instead of moving on suspended runways, the crane uses legs to support the bridge, trolley, and hoist. These legs travel on rails that are embedded in, or on top of the floor or ground structure. If a crane operator is trained properly, pendant and radio controls can both be perfectly safe methods for controlling and operating a crane. Training is a vital issue and DMR 18(11) prohibits the operation of gantry cranes by untrained persons.
Successful candidates credited with this unit standard can:
• Demonstrating knowledge of the functions of a crane.
• Identifying the safety and suitability of the crane type prior to utilization.
• Inspecting and recording the operational fitness of the components of a crane.
• Operating an overhead crane in a safe and competent manner.
• Accessing available support systems and emergency services in case of incidents and accidents

What is an overhead crane? Commonly called a bridge crane and is a type of crane found in industrial environments. An overhead bridge crane is a configuration of a single girder or double girder design. In simple terms, a bridge girder, or beam, is the support structure that allows the operator to move trolley and hoist from side-to-side along the bridge. The trolley is used to precisely position the hoist prior to raising or lowering a load in a safe work manner. Cab overhead cranes is an encased setup with glass paneled flooring for operator to view the cargo from above whilst being moved. Unlike mobile or construction cranes, Cab overhead cranes are typically used for either manufacturing or maintenance applications, where efficiency or downtime are critical factors. Operators who are not adequately trained in the Cab controlled overhead crane operations are at great risk of injury or death. Training is a vital issue and DMR 18(11) prohibits the operation of Overhead cranes by untrained persons.
Successful candidates credited with this unit standard are able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge of the functions of a cab controlled overhead crane
• Identify the safety and suitability of the crane
• Apply the recognized methods for inspecting and recording the operational fitness of all components of the crane
• Operate a cab controlled overhead crane
